Initially announced in August 2022 under the working title JR 30, the official title, Brother, was revealed in September 2023. Released worldwide on October 31, 2024, to coincide with Diwali, Brother received mixed reviews. Brother Movie Plot
Karthik, a dropout law student, is a rebellious young man and the troublesome son of Kumarasamy and Saraswathi. His habit of challenging injustices often leads to conflicts. After complaining about poor conditions in his apartment, angry neighbors confront his family, worsening his father’s high blood pressure. Karthik’s elder sister, Anandhi, tries to guide him by taking him to stay with her strict, rule-bound in-laws in Ooty.
Anandhi’s sister-in-law, Archana, helps Karthik secure a job as a hospital bouncer, but he gets fired after standing up to a patient’s relative exploiting an elderly man. Anandhi then arranges a job for him as a PT teacher at her school, but he clashes with a colleague and is dismissed again. The family caretaker, Keshav, tries to arrange a psychiatric consultation for Karthik, but an injury disrupts the plan, further straining the family’s dynamic. Anandhi’s father-in-law, Sivagurunathan, the District Collector of the Nilgiris, offers Karthik a chance to observe his work, hoping to instill discipline.
During this period, Karthik witnesses villagers in Pannaikadu protesting for electric fencing to protect against wild animals. Disheartened by the collector’s inaction, Karthik advises the villagers to threaten self-immolation, pushing Sivagurunathan to act swiftly and resolve the issue. However, tensions rise at Anandhi’s in-laws’ house, and Karthik’s presence becomes unwelcome. Despite Anandhi’s efforts to mediate, Sivagurunathan and his family humiliate her and Karthik, forcing them to leave.
Back home, Kumarasamy and Saraswathi are furious with Karthik, blaming him for Anandhi’s troubles. In his anger, Kumarasamy reveals that Karthik is adopted and demands he mend Anandhi’s relationship with her in-laws to regain acceptance. Determined, Karthik seeks forgiveness from Sivagurunathan’s family but is met with rejection. In a drastic move, Sivagurunathan even fires Keshav, their loyal caretaker, to underscore his displeasure.
Amid these struggles, Archana, who has grown fond of Karthik, supports him. At a school event, Aravind, Sivagurunathan’s son, is touched by his children’s feelings and reconciles with Anandhi. However, Sivagurunathan remains unyielding, leading Aravind and his family to move in with Karthik. Eventually, even Hemamalini, Sivagurunathan’s wife, leaves him to join Karthik’s household. Archana proposes marrying Karthik to bridge the divide, but Sivagurunathan publicly insults her. Meanwhile, Dr. Vinay, who has unrequited feelings for Archana, proposes to her, seeking Sivagurunathan’s favor.
Sivagurunathan’s ambitions for a promotion to a higher office are thwarted when a video narrated by Karthik, highlighting his work in Pannaikadu, surfaces during a press conference. Facing criticism, Sivagurunathan resigns from his position, and Dr. Vinay abandons him. Despite their differences, Karthik rescues Sivagurunathan from an attack, leading the latter to realize his mistakes. Sivagurunathan accepts Karthik as his son-in-law and agrees to his marriage to Archana. He apologizes to Anandhi and acknowledges Kumarasamy and Saraswathi’s efforts in raising Karthik.
During the wedding, a surprising revelation unfolds as Kumarasamy discovers that Keshav orchestrated Sivagurunathan’s kidnapping. Despite this, Sivagurunathan forgives Keshav, completing the story on a note of reconciliation and unity.
Brother Movie Filming
Principal photography for Brother began on August 5, 2022, with the first schedule taking place in Chennai. Bhumika Chawla joined the production in mid-August to film her portions. The final schedule started in early September 2023, and the entire filming process was completed by February 2024.

Brother was released worldwide in theaters on October 31, 2024, coinciding with Diwali. The release faced competition from Amaran and Bloody Beggar.

Abhinav Subramaniam of The Times of India rated the film 3/5 stars, stating, Brother is enjoyable in parts, though the soap-opera vibes detract from its appeal. Simran Khan of Times Now also gave 3/5 stars, commenting, Despite its predictable elements and somewhat boring moments, Brother succeeds in delivering a watchable experience… offering a delightful mix of comedy and drama that appeals to audiences of all ages.
In contrast, Goutham S of Pinkvilla rated the film 2.5/5 stars, describing it as a formulaic comedy movie that provides little entertainment. Janani K of India Today and Avinash Ramachandran of The Indian Express both gave 2/5 stars, with Janani remarking, Brother is yet another redundant film that offers nothing new, and Avinash noting, It’s just another disappointing addition to attempts at reclaiming past glory.
